Bid to Department for Transport Safe Cycling Bid

Decision Maker: Executive Director Community Protection, Transport and Environment

Decision status: Recommendations approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

To approve the offer of funding from the Department for Transport Safe Cycling Fund

Decision:

It was AGREED that:

1.         The grant of £1.579m from the Department for Transport for Walton Bridge Links and Leatherhead Ashtead Links cycle safety schemes be accepted in accordance with the Cabinet Decision of 26 March 2013

2.         The funding shortfall of £15,000 would be identified through scheme efficiencies or within the Environment and Infrastructure budget.

Reasons for the decision:

The County Council was awarded the second highest amount of any local authority within the DfT Cycle Safety Fund.  This was in recognition of the quality of the bid and the evidence of cycle casualties that the schemes are designed to address.  This will deliver real benefit for Surrey residents and forms part of the County Council’s corporate priority to encourage more people to cycle in the County.

Alternative options considered:

The only other option would be to decide not to take up the grant.  Given the high levels of cycle casualties in the two areas, this was not considered to be a viable option.
