MV: Required improvement of footpath from Kingscroft Road to St John’s Avenue

We the undersigned petition Surrey County Council to ensure the footpath which joins St John’s Avenue to Kingscroft Road, running alongside Leatherhead Trinity School, is made safe for those walking through on their own and/or at night. The council should repair and/or maintain robust fences either side of the footpath - at the present moment, there are sections where the fence is in disrepair and could be used to access private gardens. The council should install more lighting - at the present moment, the existing light in the centre of the path is too dim to adequately light the full path, forcing residents to use their own lighting (torch, mobile phone etc) in order to avoid tripping on the uneven pathway.

The council has a duty of care to maintain the safety and usability of footpaths that are kept at public expense, and must take all reasonable measures to prevent harm to footpath users. Given recent incidents in the news about violence towards women, this footpath is not safe for people who are walking out alone when its dark - this could be as early as 5pm in winter and affects commuters walking from Leatherhead train station). It is not acceptable that people are having to run through the footpath to get through it quickly or to use their own personal devices to provide adequate lighting to walk through.
